Bukit Lawang is a popular tourist destination located on the edge of the Gunung Leuser National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site home to numerous bird, plan and mammal species, most famously the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii), which can be seen in the jungle in Bukit Lawang as well as at the daily feedings. Apart from visits to the jungle, Bukit Lawang offers a relaxed atmosphere alongside the banks of the Bohorok river, with many guests staying for weeks or months on end.

BUKIT LAWANG - HISTORY
The conservation status of the orangutan became of international concern in the 1960s, and in 1964 the Sepilok orangutan rehabilitation centre, in Sabah, Malaysia, became the first to attempt to rehabilitate captive orangutan. In 1971, the Ketambe orangutan centre was established in Aceh, North Sumatra, not far as the crow flies from Bukit Lawang, but a long way and arduous by road.
The Bohorok Orang utan Centre (Bohorok is the nearest town to Bukit Lawang, and also the name of the river that runs through both places) was established in Bukit Lawang in 1973 by Regina Frey and Monica Boerner, two Swiss zoologists as a rehabilitation centre for captive orangutans. Although illegal, orangutans were widely held as pets in Indonesia, and the centre sought to reintroduce them to the wild. It was supported by the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) and Frankfurt Zoological Society.
The practice of keeping orangutans as pets was very damaging to the wild population as people sought only baby orangutans, who were cute and relatively easy to handle in comparison to an adult orangutan, which is large and four times stronger than an adult human. In doing so it was usual to kill the mother of the baby, usually by shooting her, a process that often killed the baby as well - it is estimated that five orangutans are killed for every one that is successfuly brought to market as a pet.
The centre was built a couple of kilometres from the village in order to minimise contact with humans - the orangutans were after all being trained to live away from human contact. The ability to see orangutans in close proximity brought first local and later international tourists to the village, and soon a visitors centre was built, as more tourists arrived.
THINGS TO DO IN - BUKIT LAWANG
The prime tourist draws in Bukit Lawang are orang utan trekking in the Gunung Leuser national park and visiting the orangutan feeding, which takes place twice daily in Bukit Lawang. However some visitors stay for many weeks without visiting the orangutans, instead preferring to soak up the relaxed atmosphere - nightly jungle parties at various guesthouses featuring guitar-playing guides drinking bir Bintang and singing late into the night.
(1) ORANGUTAN FEEDING
Bukit Lawang - Leuser Platform Feeding Attention: as of August 14th, 2014, new permit fees of 150,000rp per person apply to visit the feeding sessions (locals pay only 5,000rp). We believe these are excessive, and advise you to skip the feeding and just do a jungle trek, where you are likely to see orang utans.
The feeding sessions are twice daily at 9am-10am and 3pm-4pm. You need to buy a permit in the National Park Visitor Centre at the bottom of the village. The feeding sessions takes place at the other end of the village, opposite Jungle Inn.
There is a further fee of 50,000rp charged if you want to bring a camera to the feeding session, and 150,000rp for video cameras.
(2) SWIMMING AT THE BAHOROK RIVER
Play time, Bukit LawangThe number one activity for local tourists in Bukit Lawang is swimming ('mandi') in the river. Thousands of locals visit on public holidays just to mandi in the river, enjoy their picnic lunch, before returning to Medan.
Western visitors can also enjoy swimming in the Bohorok river. Good places to swim include outside the Sibayak hotel where there is a rock popular with local children for jumping into the river, and at the camping ground, half-way up the river, which normally has fewer people than locations further down stream. Below the Ecolodge, next to Rindu Alam Hotel is another good spot.
(3) TUBING
The Bohorok river, which runs through Bukit Lawang, is a popular venue for tubing. Tubing is floating down the river in an inflated truck inner tube. You can hire tubes at many points along the river in the village for the day, walk up stream, and then float down the river as far as the Sibayak guesthouse.If you'd like a bit more of an adventure then you can try tubing to Bohorok, 10 kilometres downstream.
(4) BAT CAVE

The Bat Cave (gua kampret in Indonesian) is located 2km from the village. The trail starts from the Ecolodge hotel, and there are some signposts. A torch is required to see anything inside the cave, which is around 500-metres long and is home to many thousands of bats.
A small entrance fee, of 5,000rp, may be collected by the land owners.
There are two further caves, less commonly visited, the Swallow Cave, and the Ship Cave.
If you would like to visit the Bat cave with a guide, the price is 300,000rp for any size of group, to walk from the village to the cave, show you around the cave and then walk back to the village.
